Geese - after Christmas

Here's a view of the Christmas geese. How many geese were there?

Hope you enjoyed the pix.

River's up!

It rained (green bars). The watershed brought the water to our place (green line). The river will return to normal soon (purple line).
Check it out yourself by clicking this Buffalo River at Lobelville

The bridge on the path hasn't floated away this time... it's tethered with a clothesline tied to the nearby birch tree.

Just this side of the bridge is a birch tree laying on its side. The beavers have chopped it down. They'll probably haul it away when the river (& current) subsides.

If a tree falls . . .

For many years, there was one tree at the river bank that loomed above all others. A proud tree. As time passed, he lost his leaves for good, but not his stature.

Though he would, from time to time, lose a limb he still would befriend the birds. One particular rainy afternoon, he was seen hosting so many birds that needed him for a perch so they could rest a fluff their feathers of the wet rain.

Many a time we would train our binoculars up into his heights to get a better look at an osprey gazing down onto the river in search of its next tasty fish.

Sadly, this past week he laid down to rest, shattering his few remaining limbs. He will be missed.

Hot? BLAZING HOT!

Excitement at the river late this afternoon! While doing dishes, looking out the kitchen window a fire was spotted out by the road. Here you can see a view from the house, looking out at the road, and (below) two other "after" pictures at the scene.

Sorry no pictures of the fire itself. Our resident photographer was cutting a new trail/firebreak with the tractor, and helping to tamp out the fire.

All's well that ends well.

THANKS
to the Linden Volunteer Fire Department.
Soon after a call to 911 several folks arrived and tamped out the fire at its edges; then they stood by to be sure no more fires popped up.

Bare feet

Soon after arriving, it's off to the river bank. Just walking to the river in bare feet is so summer.
The river is like glass. It's late evening. The sun has left our place, but still shines its warmth to the trees up on the ridge to the East.
Looking down at the river from the bank, a dark shape is seen. A small log, floating just below the surface? Nope, it's a turtle! There's his head poking through the water to get him some air. Scan upstream to follow a splush sound; back to the turtle... but, he gone.
Shh! Listen: at first, all there is is silence. Then, listening more carefully, is the sound of two birds talking to each other. Summer is great.

Hot

Forecasters are predicting several days of extremely hot weather starting Sunday that could put people and crops in danger.
Temperatures in the upper 90s are expected across the state this week and the heat plus humidity could put people at risk, according to the National Weather Service.
"It is when the temperature doesn't drop below 80 at night over a period of days that we get concerned, especially with the homeless..." Record high temperatures for the year are expected for parts of Middle Tennessee this week

She's waiting for momma to awaken.

Early morning

It's a cloudy day at the river.

Back home at the farm

We're back at the river today. The garden is full of tomatoes, potatoes, squash, onions, corn, cabbage, broccoli, watermelon, cantaloupe, green beans, jalapeƱo peppers, cucumbers and some herbs.
